NBD - Draft Stats & Review

Before I dive into the results of Week 1, I wanted to take a look back at the draft and delve into the numbers a little bit. With this being our first auction draft, most of us had some question marks as far as strategy and definitely some different approaches emerged during the auction. Some people focused most of their money on a few big expenditures, while others spread the wealth around to help create a more balanced team. I spent the first two sets of this evening's US Open final putting together a spreadsheet and have found identified some statistics that I thought might be interesting and useful in future auctions.

First, I calculated the average amounts that were spent at each starting position. I also noted the most and least expensive player at each position and the player closest to the average cost.

Quarterbacks
Average Cost: $26.42
Most Expensive QB: Aaron Rodgers, $62 (Eastwood's Chair)
Least Expensive QB: Alex Smith, $1 (Finga Sniffs)
Closest to Average QB: Michael Vick, $23 (Higgs-Boson)

Running Back 1s:
Average Cost: $42.83
Most Expensive RB1: Arian Foster, $61 (...)
Least Expensive RB1: Michael Turner, $28 (Stocks in Clarks Wallabees)
Closest to Average RB1: Matt Forte, $41 (72's Ducats)

Running Back 2s:
Average Cost: $20.83
Most Expensive RB2: Ryan Mathews, $38 (72's Ducats)
Least Expensive RB2: Ryan Williams, $1 (Finga Sniffs)
Closest to Average RB2: Doug Martin & Reggie Bush, $22 (Higgs-Boson & Stocks in Clarks)

Wide Receiver 1s:
Average Cost: $30.75
Most Expensive WR1: Calvin Johnson, $50 (Finga Sniffs)
Least Expensive WR1: Dwayne Bowe, $14 (72's Ducats)
Closest to Average WR1: Hakeem Nicks, $30 (Burke City Giants)

Wide Receiver 2s:
Average Cost: $21.00
Most Expensive WR2: Victor Cruz, $34 (Finga Sniffs)
Least Expensive WR2: Titus Young, $7 (Burke City Giants)
Closest to Average WR2: Percy Harvin, $20 (Gaus's Garage) & Dez Bryant, $22 (Stocks in Clarks)

Tight Ends:
Average Cost: $15.50
Most Expensive TE: Jimmy Graham, $34 (72's Ducats)
Least Expensive TE: Coby Fleener, $1 (Zombie Lassard)
Closest to Average TE: Vernon Davis, $18

The average cost of a Defense was $1.54; the average cost of a Kicker was $1.42.
Now that I've created this spreadsheet, I plan on using it all season long to calculate and keep track of how much value each of us is getting for our picks. More on that in the Weekly Review, coming soon.

I'd love to hear from you guys in the Comments as to what your strategies were coming in and whether you stuck to them or not. For example, I came in wanting a top-3 QB and being prepared to spend $55 to get one. When Brees ended up only costing me $41, I had some extra money to spend at RB1, where I had expected to get one of the 2nd-tier guys like Forte or Chris Johnson or Jamaal Charles. I was happy to take LeSean McCoy instead. The rest of my draft went more or less as I'd anticipated, except that tight ends in general went for more than I was expecting, and I ended up getting the lowest-ranked TE1 in the league, Coby Fleener. Prove me wise, Fleener!

had no clue to what I was doing other than I wanted Foster and I wasn't going to spend more than $64 to get him. As the draft went on I had some guys I identified and a range, but they mostly fell out of it. I also made it a point to never be in a position to be outbid, and that only happened once (Boldin). I tried to make my money last for any possible player. I think I underpaid for some guys, but I just don't know if they were quality guys to begin with (Wells, Rice, Greene). For not knowing what the hell I was doing, I think I ended up with a safe team, but not a great team. I do know I will never participate in another league if they aren't auction drafting.

I did more planining than I ever have, including participating in several mocks. I assigned a total value to each position and pretty much kept to my plan. I per-valued each major player and did not exceed my pre-set values. Like Sam, my valuing led to a good but not great but well balanced team.
I loved the auction format. I also did a team by team evaluation based on valuing each team in totality based on Rotowires ADP's. My system probably gives to much value to middle of the roaders but I will include it in a separate post. I a,m a little embarrased because I end up with the best draft using my system.. We'll see as I suffer through Flacco completing everything. Throw to Torrey Smith exclusively Joe.

next time you can't sleep do me a favor and re-calculate those rankings without Defenses and Kickers and see how they come out. Seems silly that having the 12th-best Kicker would be worth the same as having the 12th-best RB1.

I had a clear strategy in my head, and feel like I executed it more or less. Going into the draft my feeling was that I had no idea whatsoever as to whether or not my strategy would be successful, and I think that I'm slowly realizing a handful of mistakes that I made with regards to how I targeted various spots on my roster. All in all I had a great time and I think I'll be better prepared for next year.
